This is a photo series from a really cool abandoned train tunnel and a floating ice cave in a glacier that we explored while waiting for the weather to clear in Valdez AK this spring.
Ok so I'm prolly goin' to the Redbull Buttercup Jam at Holiday Valley in March and I've never been to a competition before, so if anyone has any tricks i should learn or anything i should know I'd love the help
~ thank you everyone !
So I've been snowboarding for around twelve years or so and had never really questioned my impact on the environment. until four years ago when i was working for the food and bev dept. at the Village. we did the night deliveries to Casper and bear flats. Great resort job by the way, i mean they let me drive a cat, which is super fun. Any way around this time i started to take a minimalist view on life and what i really needed to get by but still have a fulfilling and meaningful life. i started to get rid of things that i didn't need, if i didn't use it on a daily basis or at least a few times a week i probably didn't need it so it had to go. the more i thought about it and looked at my life and my pile of stuff the guiltier i began to feel. i had so much(some of which hardly ever got used), while others have so little. so unloading all my extras if you will, really made me feel good for a while. but the feeling only lasted so long. with winter ending and summer slowly creeping in the gear i use makes a slow change as well. but now i had a new pile of things to sift through and decide what is necessary. for some reason getting rid of my extra clutter just wasn't enough. i needed to make a big change but i didn't know what to do. well the answer for me that year came to in the form of a question. My good friend Adam asked if i wanted to go to New Zealand with him for six months or so. it didn't take long for me to respond, hell yes! some might find it crazy or just plain out dumb to leave Jackson in the winter, which is understandable. we all moved here for the mountains and the snow, not just the epic tubing on Flat creek.... but i needed a change and here it was, six months of summer in the south pacific. I know from a minimalist point of view it does not make sense to fly half way around the world, but i was going to be in a place where i would not need to wear as many layers or sit on a chairlift or drive a cat around the mtn spilling gas, oil, hydrolic fluid and garbage all over. so in my mind the flight was kind of justified, not to mention i haven't had a car for nearly seven years. so while Jackson was having a record breaking snow year i was surfing and skating in New Zealand. trust me it wasn't always easy, picturing all my friends making the pow turns of their life, but that's where i was. after almost six months we returned to the Hole, happy and as refreshed as ever. we brought back knowledge of permaculter and organic farming, and a summers worth of surf and skate memories, which will be with me till the day i die. that summer was a strange transition. mostly it was hard to not be able to share snow stories with everyone that just had the winter of their life. but it was OK because i was in the middle of one of the longest summers of my life. although this summer i had a big decision to make. do i go back to work for the Village or do i just try to buy a pass, or do say forget the resort altogether and stick to the back country. well i didn't get a pass either way, but i didn't forget about the resort completely seeing as snowfall made it almost too dangerous to hike the pass or anywhere else for that matter. I'm lucky enough to have friends that work for the Village and they were kind enough to give me some lift ticket vouchers they receive at the start of the season. i also knew that if i wasn't going to be riding lifts everyday i would need to find a new way to access the mountains. After years of trial and error with boot packing, approach ski's, snowshoeing, i decided it was time to try a split board. so with the snow pack to dangerous for my comfort and skill level i spent a few days riding the lifts at the resort. it was really fun to be surrounded by friends and other people who are genuinely stoked to be playing in the snow not to mention it was Christmas time. once the snow settled we started to get on the split boards, which was going to be my focus anyway. i wanted to be the one responsible for getting me to the top of the mountain. also from a minimalist point of view i already impacted the earth enough with the production and distribution of all my gear and the gas used to get me where i need to start my day. but my selfish desire to explore and ride the deepest pow i can overrides any guilt i may have felt in the past. plus now I'm doing something i feel is a good sustainable decision. and i just want to say i though i knew what bottomless pow was but no, i learned what it really felt like last winter one day in the park. well now the 09,10 winter is upon us and again i have no ski pass. I'm finally finding a happy medium between riding the resort and hiking and skinning which is a good feeling. snowboarding has been a passion of mine for many years now and it was interesting to find a way to keep shredding with out the guilt of destroying the mountain i use and love. Hike Fast, Take Chances, Leave But One Line.....
The Patriot Bandaril is a special edition inspired by the US riders who consistently dominate with their progression and skill. Expect it to show up at the Olympic Qualifying Grand Prix events this year.
AVALON7 is owned and operated by former US Snowboard Team member Rob Kingwill.
Special editon means get it now or it will be gone.
I am putting the finishing touches on all the new bandaril designs for the Winter 2010 line... lots and lots of work, but everything looks dope!
This is the Late Nite Bandaril design by proskier Sage Cattabria Alosa. It is one of my favorites in this round.
More coming soon!

Ok so i got a coupon for Rome snowboards and I was wondering what would be the best one for under $450
Written early one morning last season - just before heading out on a totally gnar pow day;
Bow down all ye faithfull...
and give thanks to the Powder Gods, for they have blessed us with a foot of freshies and declared
"Go forth...and Stomp the Pow".
And to show our gratitude we vow to Shred the Gnar with steezy jibs and tight lines.
Yes we are thankful, the powder is deep and life is good!
As I sit in my house, staring at Mt.Mansfield, I can't help but imagine the clean undulating runs, cut into the mountain, as white instead of tan. Although I "belong" in the trees, anticipation is getting the best of me.
This is reposted from an interview I did with Jeff Moran on Snowboard.com
here we go...
1) who are you? what's your company's name? My name is Rob Kingwill, and I am a pro-snowboarder. I am the founder of AVALON7.
2) what does your company make/produce/do? Well... sometimes I think I am still trying to figure that out. AVALON7 started as a bandana company- super limited edition with fresh graphics. I am still focused on the bandanas and bandarils (mesh hexagonal bandanas) being the primary products, but recently we have been getting into doing original handdrawn art on fitted hats. My boy RUCKUS just pumps out the sickest shit, and I am stoked to have him on the team making unique stuff for my brand. We also make some limited edition Tshirts and Hoodies, and winter touques as well. Then there is the online community side to AVALON7... I built it to support riders and their crews, and to create an online trick resource, the AV7TrickVault, to help kids learn faster. Progression through technology. A-V-7.com also hosts the AV7Battles where you can put your shred vids up against other riders or crews and win stuff, and the AV7 Mountain Collectives... I could go on and on. Just check it out.
3) when did you start it? 2005 at Camp of Champions
4) why did you start it? I started AV7 mostly as a way to focus my talents and force myself to learn how to be a better designer, how to do web design, how to sell shit, etc. Plus if it ever blows up my number one goal is to take all of my friends heliboarding. The whole company was built purely out of money I won from snowboard contests, and with my spare time in the off seasons.
5) how did it start? I made about 150 hand-cut, block printed bandarils for the Camp of Champions campers in the summer of 2005. I would coach on the hill all day, then come home and make some bandarils, then go back to work, and then come home and make some more. My house was strewn with bandarils everywhere, drying in the sun.
6) what's the name mean? AVALON7 is a reference to the fairy realm in the legend of King Arthur. Jackson Hole is the kingdom... To me it mostly means a place of heightened awareness, or elevated perspective. The logo is called the AV7 Sigyl- it has a meaning beyond just "AVALON7 the bandana company/website blah blah". The Sigyl represents the idea of being FUTUREPOSITIV. Stay with me now... FUTUREPOSITIV is a way of being in the world that will make the future a positive place to be... are you FUTUREPOSITIV? There is so much doom and gloom these days, and I don't buy it. Hopefully AV7 can spread the idea that if we all do even a little bit each day to make the world a better place it will be. Do not give in to their fear mongering!
7) where is it based out of? Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
8) how involved are you with the company? what do you do? I run the show, make the stickers, sew the labels, program the website, do the graphic design, make the orders, fill the orders, yell at RUCKUS... I pretty much do everything.
9) What's your goal with AV7? My goal is to have a rad, sustainable company that promotes the FUTUREPOSITIV vibe. And to take my buddies on a heli.
10) do you have a team? who? I don't have a team. I just have a bunch of rad friends that like to rock my stuff.
11) where do you see AV7 in 5 years? 10? 5 years- Gaining momentum as a streetwear brand, staying true to the cause. 10 years: the sky is the limit.
12) any notable AV7 moments? Shaun White, Hannah Teter, Gretchen Blieler, Elena Hight all rocking my bandanas in the Olympics.
13) where would we have seen your gear before? any particular time or
place? I am everywhere... just look around. Some of the very best snowboarders and skiers in the world are rocking my stuff, DJs, rappers, artists, filmmakers. For a company with no funding to speak of, AV7 has some pretty deep "market penetration". And I have just begun.
14) who do you work with? artists? helpers? staff? mongrels? I would be nothing without my crew of artists that I work with, RUCKUS, Haworth, AddFueltotheFire, Kelly D. Williams, and Duran. Not to mention all of my shred friends and compatriots. The rest of the biz is just me getting after it. I wish I had some mongrels to weed stickers for me... that would be cool.
15) tell me about the different levels of AV7? There are 7 levels built into the brand. Each level has a color and and number. LVLl 1 is white for example. LVL7 is silver. You can move up in LVLs by posting videos of your riding in the AV7TrickVault. For example, a frontside air is a LVL1 trick. A frontside 1080 is a LVL7 trick. The idea is to help riders progress by giving them goals and rewards for their skills. Every time you move up a LVL, you get access that LVL's privileges, including discounts in the AV7 Online store and custom AV7 LVL goggle badges.
16) is AV7 for snowboarders only? who are you trying to reach? I am down for riders of all backgrounds, whether it be snowboarding or skiing, skating or surf. As long as you ride.
17) what question(s) have i not asked that you'd like to answer? I am still a full time pro-snowboarder... I ride for Arbor, the North Face, Smith, Bern, Skullcandy, Jackson Hole, World Boards, Bluebird, IAM, flow from RedBull, and AVALON7 of course. I won the US Open Halfpipe in 1998, and I won the North Face Masters in Alaska last year.
18) double stuff or regular oreos? Regular. I just like the cookie part... I usually scrape off the filling.
19) poop dick or vagildo? I don't speak portuguese.
20) how will AV7 change snowboarding? the world? One step at time. I think the world is ready for a brand that is built on positivity and hope for a brighter future. We are FUTUREPOSITIV!
